Independent Film

... a motion picture made by a filmmaker who has no connection with the Hollywood scene… – The Complete Film Dictionary 1st Ed.

I am so motivated by the hustle in my pursuit of success as an indie filmmaker! I also appreciate my ability to contain my enthusiasm that I’m learning to value the process, and building valuable relationships. Now don’t get me wrong, I have rushed to judgment and I don’t regret it because I’m also learning ways to navigate the playing field and strategically plan my approach. In essence, develop effectiveness. After all, it’s been said, “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.”

What I’ve noticed along the way is that some aspiring filmmakers give little-to-no attention to the “script-to-screen” process. Hey, you’ve seen me write it, and I’ll write it again: Writing is rewriting until it’s written. My God, thank you for blessing me with THAT wisdom! Basically what I’m saying is that a script must be developed before it’s shot. I’m not saying that an under-developed script can’t be shot, because anyone with a HDSLR can shoot from a drafted blueprint. It just wont be me… I respect “the hustle” too much for that nonsensical approach. Besides, I’m not into repeatedly duplicating my efforts or armature output. I’m not a perfectionist, I just like things perfect. HA! Hey, the same applies to over-developing. Come’on son, at some point you have to be confident in your work, grow, and move on.

So, would you get your script professionally analyzed? Of course it’ll cost you… it’s a service people. Let me rephrase the question, would you pay for your script to be professionally analyzed? How ‘bout this, given an opportunity to have your short script analyzed by a Sundance Short Film Programmer would you pay for it? Okay, what if you had an opportunity to have your script workshopped with the founder of an internationally recognized screenwriting competition… would you pay for that? If you answered no, then you’re probably not ready to get in the game with veterans… rookie. I’ll keep praying for you: whether you like it or not. So now, there! [arms folded]

Any whose, I’ve been blessed to have my short script for a film I’m producing, Denied, analyzed by Gordy Hoffman and Roberta Munroe. As a matter of fact, I’ll be sending my rewrite to Roberta for further analysis. I’ve decided it’s in the best interest of the project to work with her to fully develop my script, and possibly build a working relationship through her consulting services. So keep an eye out, because trust me, I’m going to deliver.

In closing, I want to give a special thanks to haters. Here’s why, because of what He said [period]. It’s the haters and naysayers, with their bad habits, that'll prove His will.

Happy Writing,
/GM

Writing is rewriting until it’s written!
